Sciatica
Sciatica is a condition that causes pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the lower back, buttocks, and lower extremities, including the leg. It occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down the back of each leg, is compressed or irritated. The most common causes of sciatica are: herniated disc, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, and trauma.
Symptoms of Sciatica
Pain that radiates from the lower back down the buttocks and into the leg
Numbness or tingling in the leg
Weakness in the leg
Burning or shooting sensations
Pain that worsens when sitting, standing, or bending forward
Stretching & Strengthening
Gentle stretching exercises can help relieve pain associated with sciatica. There are a variety of ways that you can do this. Lying stretches: knee-to-chest, knee-to-opposite-shoulder stretch, reclining pigeon pose, sciatic nerve glides and lower trunk rotations. Seated stretches: Piriformis stretch, seated spinal twist, seated hamstring stretch. Standing stretches: hamstring stretch, piriformis stretch, and scissor hamstring stretch.
Before trying any of these stretches or exercises, be sure to consult with Dr. Tarry to determine the best course of action.
