Facet Syndrome

Facet syndrome, also known as facet joint syndrome or facet arthropathy, is a condition characterized by pain and inflammation in the facet joints of the spine. These joints are located between the vertebrae and help with spinal movement and stability. Facet syndrome is often caused by degenerative changes, osteoarthritis, or trauma to the spine. Injury such as whiplash can damage the cartilage within the facet joints, causing inflammation and pain. Facet syndrome can also elicit sciatic symptoms, but is not necessarily sciatica.

Stretching & Strengthening

Gentle stretching exercises can help relieve pain associated with facet syndrome. These include knee-to-chest, cat-cow, child’s pose, and pelvic tilts. This can help relieve tension in the lower back, improve flexibility, and reduce pressure on the facet joint. Neck rotations and chin tucks can help activate your neck muscles.

Before trying any of these stretches or exercises, be sure to consult with Dr. Tarry to determine the best course of action.
