Piriformis Syndrome & Sciatica

What is Piriformis Syndrome? While sometimes confused with sciatica, it is a condition where the piriformis muscle compresses or irritates the sciatic nerve. This can cause pain to radiate down the leg, including buttock pain, pain down the back of the thigh, and numbness or tingling in the leg. If you suffer from this condition, there are steps you can take to help alleviate its symptoms. Regular chiropractic adjustments, massage, stretching, and strengthening exercises can bring you relief.

Stretching & Strengthening

Stretches such as hamstrings, hip extensors, lying piriformis stretch, seated piriformis stretch, knee to opposite shoulder, and modified pigeon stretch target the piriformis muscle and surrounding areas.

Bridges, side leg lifts, and clamshells are exercises that can help strengthen the piriformis muscle and improve hip stability.

Before trying any of these stretches or exercises, be sure to consult with Dr. Tarry to determine the best course of action.
